Sun and Shadows

I was just reading my new Southern Living that has a lot of information about Charleston, SC, one of my favorite places! Here are some photos from there. One good thing I do like about the sun is the shadows it creates. Shadows can be design elements themselves. The photo above has layers of textures, from the fern in the foreground, the greenery on the fence, the beautiful tree limbs and then the shadows on the building. I made this a black and white photos so that these layers show up better. Trees like this are such great travel agents, taking your eye around the photo.
You don't get much more "southern" than this photo taken at the battery in Charleston. The shadows add a comforting feeling to the photo. Notice the carriage follows the rules of thirds and then the tree transports your eyes over to the house, where the curved lines keep your eyes moving.
We just talked about using the sun to create a silhouette. Above is one I took at Edisto, just south of Charleston. I love cemeteries, just in case you have not picked up on that. You do lose details on silhouettes like this, but look at the drama you get in exchange.
Here is another shot of wedding rings using the sun to create a shadow that looks like a heart because of the shape of the ring and the Bible.

I just love your photos. I don't always have anything clever or insightful to say, but I always enjoy them!

I especially love the heart-shaped shadow of the wedding rings. You are a genius!

The rings in the Bible with the heart shadow is one of the best shots I have ever seen! How did you come up with that brilliant idea??

I totally agree with your love of Charleston! My son went to The Citadel and them worked for them for 10years! I have been all over that beautiful city and never tire of it. Love your photos! When are you coming to Myrtle Beach and take some photos??
