Devil's Tower

Before visiting Mount Rushmore, we went to Devil's Tower National Monument. This is located just west of Mount Rushmore, before you enter into South Dakota. We walked around the base of the formation and saw several climbers going up the sides. It is hard to capture how large this tower is in real life.
Above is our first glimpse at Devil's Tower with one of the millions of hay bales we saw along the way!

This formation is sacred to the native people that live in this area, and they will tie praying cloths in the trees, as you can see above. There were signs telling you to stay on the paths since the area was sacred. There has been controversy regarding allowing climbers to scale the sides of Devil's tower because of that but it is allowed.

Below, I took this photo as we were leaving with the red rock in the foreground. It had been raining all morning, so we were very happy to see this blue sky!

I always wanted to see this (since the movie 'Close Encounters'). I am sure it is impressive in person, your pictures are great. Love the red rocks also. Sounds like you had a great trip.
